I bought a variety of TVP products from Yang Kee Trading including slices, extra large slices, chunks, and strips because I wanted to try them all out. I am SO glad I did!!! I love these products! I am vegan, and having more options for high-protein foods is important to me. These fill that need! My favorite way to prepare them so far, is to soak them in water and leave them in the fridge for 2 hour, up to over night. Then I rinse them, squeeze out the water, rinse them again, squeeze out the water again, about 4 times because the key to not getting a funky taste from an TVP product is to do this step so don’t skip it. Then, after squeezing as much water as possible out, I put the slices in my homemade BBQ sauce. You can use any BBQ sauce, but I prefer my own which I make with soy sauce, tomato paste, liquid smoke, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, black pepper, and a teaspoons of molasses. I make sure they are thoroughly coated and let them marinate in the fridge for at least an hour. Then I lay them out in a single layer, not touching each other, on a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes at 400 degrees. They come out fantastic, and are even delicious as cold leftovers the next day or two. I am sure there are a thousand ways to make them, and I look forward to experimenting. I also got the Extra Large pieces and after I soaked, washed, and drained them, I put them on parchment paper on a baking sheet and heavily sprinkled vegan chick’n seasoning on them and baked at 400 for around 40 minutes. They came out with a very chicken-like texture - you know, fibrous like chicken breasts are - and were delish!
It works. I like it.
Once it is hydrated it is easy to use and tastes nice. Next time I will hydrate it with seasonings, I used 1/2 package and it was more than enough for 2 I had leftovers. I will buy it again.
This is so versatile and soaks up marinades well. They make being vegetarian easy. They make the best shawarma! I also make tacos, Chinese stirfries, and cheese “sreak” sandwiches.
i put the TVP strips in a stew I made with a flavorful broth and the strips took on that flavor and added a very satisfying “meat” flavor, texture and satisfaction.
